Air Flow

Air flow and room temperature is no less, if not increasingly important – computer components will nevertheless overheat, performance almost certainly deteriorate and quite conceivably fail due to excessive but often unavoidable build-up of dirt drawn into the system case by the cooling fan, consequently restricting the air flow and limiting heat dissipation; and thus contributing to poor system stability.

One may well then look to the Internet for a software solution that is quite possibly not needed, and might only serve to compound the problem, not least in an aging machine or where system resource is already limited.

PCWorkspace recommend internal cleaning PC's two to three years old, and we will professionally high-pressure clean chassis for a fee of £5.00 (on site) for the *first unit – £2.00 (off site, with works (free with a full service)).

*Peterborough, two plus units, with other works, e.g. maintenance/quick service, otherwise off-site only.

Building a Personal Computer

The following is in response to the occasional call asking for help with problems relating to personal builds, from those perhaps constructing their own PC, maybe for the first time. Building a computer might be to some surprisingly easy, can be equally complex, so we endeavour here to emphasise one or two points, based only on the experiences of callers.

Always check cables first, ensure that they are fitted correctly and haven't come loose. Clearly if the wrong components have been selected, then a solution can take time and ultimately prove more costly.

Power supplies, wattage, of course needs to be adequate, particularly if building a high-end system with an above average number of components, cards etc. A new Power Supply Unit (PSU), however, perhaps with an inadequate (not depleted) supply is unlikely to be a root cause of initial PC problems. A second-user, albeit working, PSU with a low 'depleted' delivery might however impact on components, e.g. USB sockets, screen output…

It's important to ensure that the computer is appropriately cooled and ventilated, e.g. memory, processor, system chassis and/or hard-drive(s) regardless.

Major or total main-board, post probe failure is likely one of three possibilities: damaged processor; damaged, dead main-board (notwithstanding conceivable PSU failure) or switch failure. Damaged matrix, for example, may cause a main-board component to fail, however, as with memory, is unlikely to show as a total failure.

Processors rarely fail, are more likely to be damaged through poor handling; must be fitted properly and carefully. Processors generate temperatures that can sustain damage to components if not adequately cooled.

Some high-end main-boards may only accommodate higher frequency RAM of a precise type specified in the user manual, else will need to be fitted with the correct lower frequency modules.

Memory incompatibility shouldn't be the cause of or lead to main-board failure. More likely problems will trigger error beep(s) or simply a nil output.

Memory incompatibility can also interrupt data transfer when installing the operating system, conflict with third-party software, or possibly cause a newly installed platform to hang-up or shut down.

Abrupt graphics may simply mean that the operating system has configured to the standard Windows driver. Ensure to configure a graphics device with dedicated drivers to resolve this problem, else conceivably look for possible compatibility issues between fitted RAM and dedicated memory modules on the graphics card if fitted.

Issues relating more specifically to repair or upgrade can differ substantially, e.g. components can deteriorate over time but nonetheless perform adequately on lower wattage, if say the power supply has been impacted.

The replacement of a part can then lead to further consequential component failure. For example, a graphics card that will operate with a faulty PSU that may subsequently fail completely when the power supply is replaced.

More likely a nil-output to a monitor will be a consumer unit graphics / daughter-board issue. Occasionally a display will fail of course but one should always check the data cable first. A perhaps less likely mother-board failure, regardless if the processor fan is running, will of course cause a nil-output to a screen.

Conceivable 'likely' causes of blue screen 'fatal' errors include:

  1. Change(s) to hardware, device driver(s)…
  2. Faulty device, component shorting…
  3. Faulty memory…
  4. Fautly graphics, graphics memory…
  5. Loose cable(s)…
  6. Hard-drive structure or failure…

Buying a New Computer

Before setting out to buy a new laptop or PC, first of all consider free professional advice and/or free help purchasing a unit to ensure you acquire a system that is value for money and fit for purpose. Telephone: (01733) 777878 for further information.

Maybe instead consider ones approach to buying a computer, and where appropriate, develop some understanding. Have a budget of course, but don't necessarily set out to buy an inexpensive unit. If on a limited budget conceivably look at a PC with a good resource and a price that maybe compares favourably with a budget system, a consumer unit that has been reduced or a discount negotiated perhaps, but most importantly be aware of inflated prices.

Unless specifically looking to buy an end-of-display model, try not to show that you are looking for a cheap system – you may well find that a sales representative will look for a quick sale, possibly draw you to something that the retailer wants to part with, less likely perhaps a unit that is fit for your personal needs. If looking to buy a second-user system, first consider advice.

Downloads

If possible, ALWAYS download from the ORIGINAL source, i.e. the genuine site, e.g. Adobe. If prompted by a third-party site, perhaps first consider before sourcing from the original developer, e.g. Adobe Flash, Java (Sun Micro).

Beware of BUNDLED software, sometimes as many as five if not more additional unwanted installations, e.g. Driver Update..., Internet speed..., Toolbars, Security Scans etc. Always select the CUSTOM option, NOT Express or Recommended, UNCHECK all other items and DECLINE, DECLINE offers. If there is a program amongst bundled software that may be of interest, conceivably investigate and source separately from the software developer.

On download sites in particular, beware of brightly coloured 'arbitrary' DOWNLOAD buttons which likely have nothing at all to do with the software you're looking to download, that are perhaps just as likely to install invasive programs, e.g. fix software, adware, malware.

Beware of SCAMS, be particularly careful of software prompts classed as RANSOM or ROGUE with malicious code that can block your access to the Internet and/or your desktop; downloads that will attempt to charge money. NEVER in these circumstances be tempted to pay an online fine, pay for a solution or enter card details.

Gaming

AMD processors have a good reputation amongst gamers, but one should perhaps nonetheless be aware that AMD chip architecture, typically generating more heat, differs from that of an Intel chip. To that end, an AMD system might be a preferred choice if looking to obtain a consumer unit for gaming specifically, notwithstanding a need to ensure adequate air flow and appropriate ventilation.

By the same token, one might think about sustained use before opting for an AMD laptop. Laptops typically house mobile chip technology not necessarily designed for enhanced gaming. All notebook budgets today should perhaps also allow for the purchase of a laptop cooler regardless.

If a laptop is a pre-requisite and is also to accommodate enhanced gaming, then Intel's new generation of multi-core processors may well meet your needs, but one should also bear in mind that game development runs alongside technology, and therefore particular attention must be made to platform and chip compatibility, i.e. check operating system on disc(s), ensure that software is compatible and/or conceivably seek advice from your specialist game supplier.

Some software developers need time to catch-up with latest OS and chip technology which may explain why some of your games will not run.

Validation

Activation, Registration, Validation – What does it all mean?

Activation is a pre-requisite following the installation of your Operating System, e.g. Windows. Recovery console installations may not require activation… as a rule though, one has 30 days to activate their product licence (new installation) and moreover OEM software can only then be re-activated on the same machine.

Registration, simply, is not obligatory, a means to register your product (software & licence) and sign-up for email updates and product information etc.

Validation refers to the all important ongoing support of your operation system and application software… quite simply if one fails to update, does not opt-in to validation during automatic or manual updates, their system will almost certainly remain flawed, become more vulnerable to threats and quite probably unstable.

In the latter half of 2008, it was estimated that there were in excess of 4,000,000 systems in the UK with recorded Validation and/or Licence issues.

Vista

XP, Vista or Windows 7 – Albeit some development was held-over pending the release of Windows 7 brought foward to 22 October 2009, with exception the only conceivable argument against Vista or Windows 7 for the home user is the possible cost of replacing expensive business application software not compatible with the new operating system.

For those who have experienced problems, many issues can be explained and/or prevented by sourcing the correct peripheral drivers for printers etc., doubly ensuring that the earlier XP only discs are not installed avoiding any potential conflict.

While only 20% more code than XP, Vista is greatly enhanced and a larger installation. A Vista and Windows 7 consumer unit requires a greater resource to accommodate more recent enhancement and ongoing development, e.g. 1 – 2Gb of RAM ideally as a minimum for entry level systems compared with an adequate 512Mb – 1Gb of memory in many XP systems. Consequently some later machines may appear slow by comparison!
